Michael Hall at the Textile Center

Today was the opening of local author and illustrator Michael Hall's work on exhibit at the Textile Center

There was a reception with food and drink, and guests could look at Michael's artwork on display.  The gallery featured his giclee prints, paper collages and sketches from both published and unpublished work.  His artwork will remain on display through May 31st if you didn't get the chance to see it tonight.  The prints are also available for purchase!

After the opening reception, Michael spoke with guests.

He read several of his books, including his most recent - It's an Orange Aardvark! as well as the not-yet-published Red.

After his readings, Michael took questions from the crowd.

Then Michael was available for signing books.

We are also celebrating Children's Book Week this week, and since Addendum is one of the official CBW bookstores, we handed out Book Week posters and tote bags to guests.

Signed copies of all of Michael Hall's books - It's an Orange Aardvark, Cat Tale, Perfect Square, and My Heart is Like a Zoo - are available at Addendum.

Thank you to the Textile Center for inviting us to be a part of this wonderful evening!

Twin Cities Teen Lit Con 2014

Addendum is partnering with MELSA for a fantastic all-day program: the inaugural year of the Twin Cities Teen Lit Con

This Saturday, May 17th, join us from 9:30am-4:30pm with national authors Derf Backderf, Ally Condie, Maureen Johnson, and David Levithan, and local authors Swati Avasthi, Anne Greenwood Brown, Catherine Clark, Pete Hautman, Geoff Herbach, and Carrie Mesrobian!  The event will be held at Henry Sibley High School, 1897 Delaware Ave., Mendota Heights 55118.

The official press release:
"“On May seventeenth, a host of Young Adult authors will be coaxed, blinking and scowling, from their dank, spidery garrets and asked to share a host of astonishing secrets with their readers. Or something like that. I will be among them.” Pete Hautman, award-winning author.

The first Teen Lit Con, coming up on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Henry Sibley High School from 9:30-4:30, is honored to welcome Pete Hautman and many other wonderful Young Adult authors from out of town and closer to home.

Those traveling to our fair state include Derf Backderf (author of the graphic bio MY FRIEND DAHMER, an account of his teenage friendship with the future serial killer), Ally Condie (author of the MATCHED Trilogy, a #1 New York Times bestseller), Maureen Johnson (bestselling author of the Shades of London Series), and David Levithan (editor turned bestselling author of books including NICK AND NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST).
Minnesota authors include Swati Avasthi, Anne Greenwood Brown, Catherine Clark, Pete Hautman, Geoff Herbach, and Carrie Mesrobian.

The all-day lit con is free and open to everyone, no registration required. There are writing workshops with authors; a publication workshop featuring an author, an agent, and an editor; an exhibit hall featuring local publishers, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, a literary-themed photo booth, and much more. There will also be concessions – cash only, so stop at the ATM on your way.

Members of the Page Warriors, the teen advisory group for the Henry Sibley library, can hardly wait to meet their favorite authors: “I'm so excited for TeenLitCon!! I'm fan-girling so hard right now!!” says Victoria, 14.

Carrie Mesrobian, this year’s Minnesota Book Award winner in the Young Adult Literature category, points out that, “what's special about conferences like Teen Lit Con isn't what happens during them. It's what will happen after. Which will be: a flurry of teenagers rushing home to read new books and attack abandoned writing projects with fresh enthusiasm.”

Sponsors & Partners include MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency), Henry Sibley High School, Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment, Metronet, Mackin Educational Resources, and Addendum Books. Visit teenlitcon.org for complete author profiles, a more detailed schedule of events, and other information."

See the schedule above (blue page) for the various workshops, presentations, and activities on offer.

In the Exhibit Hall there will be button-making with book pages, a photo booth, and more!

Attendees will receive this cool TLC bag for carrying around all your goodies (signed books, perhaps?!).

Addendum will be selling books all day, and authors will be signing books by our table at various times throughout the day.  Look for us in the Exhibit Hall! We accept cash, checks, and cards.

You can tweet and instagram the event throughout the day - use the hashtag: #teenlitcon (no photos during the presentations, please).

We are thrilled to be a part of such a great event, and hope to see you there!

Children's Book Week 2014 at Addendum!

Today is the first day of Children's Book Week, 2014! If you are unfamiliar with CBW, it is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading.

"Established in 1919, Children's Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, commemorative events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes -- wherever young readers and books connect! Each year, bookstores from coast to coast are selected as official event venues." - Book Week Online

We're pleased to announce that Addendum was asked to be one of the official bookstores for 2014!  Check out all the official bookstores and their events across the country - for the first time ever all 50 states are participating!

One of our readers at Addendum - enjoying a good book and a new tote, thanks to Children's Book Week!

We had our official kick off to CBW yesterday, with Pete Hautman at Addendum. In addition to the amazing book offer from Pete (read our post to find out what it was!), guests also received a free tote and poster for CBW 2014 (see top photo).

If you weren't able to make it Sunday, you have another chance to receive the CBW tote and poster! Join us at The Textile Center (3000 University Ave. SE, Minneapolis 55414) this Thursday, May 15th from 6-8pm. We will be celebrating the release of local author and illustrator Michael Hall's newest book - It's an Orange Aardvark! The Textile Center studio will feature Michael’s giclee prints, paper collages and sketches from published and unpublished work on exhibit from May 15 – 31.

Addendum will be selling books for the event, and we will be handing out free CBW totes and posters, while supplies last!

You can also celebrate CBW with us at another off-site event this weekend - Teen Lit Con! More info tomorrow.

Pete Hautman at Addendum!

National Book Award winner Pete Hautman joined us today at Addendum to celebrate the release of the third book in his Klaatu Diskos trilogy - The Klaatu Terminus

We were lucky enough to hear him read from a book he is working on that won't be out for two more years -  we were his first audience!

The excerpt he read was really funny, and we can't wait to read it in its entirety!

A special thanks to all the families who came to spend Mother's Day with us at Addendum. No better way to spend the day than at a bookstore!

After the reading, Pete answered questions from his fans.

Then he was available for signing books.

Pete had a special deal for attendees who purchased at least one book from the trilogy today at Addendum. In his own words:
Free Books.
That's right. I am so desperate for readers I'm GIVING away books on Mothers Day. And you don’t even have to be a mom!
Yes, there is a catch. There’s always a catch, right?
Here’s the catch. You must come to Addendum Books between 1:00 and 2:30 the afternoon of May 11. That’s THIS Sunday. Mom’s Day.
Addendum Books specializes in YA literature, and they know their stuff. The shop is in St. Paul's Cathedral Hill District, at the corner of Selby and Western, in the lower level of the Blair Arcade. It’s tucked into the back of a full size general interest bookstore. It’s a bookstore-within-a-bookstore! It’s like a Tardis, only bookier! (Addendum will be moving into a new space soon—stay tuned!)
I'll be there signing copies of the Klaatu Diskos Trilogy and I might even read a few pages.  Everybody who buys at least one of the trilogy gets a free book from my specially selected backlist of adult titles (Doohickey, Ring Game, Rag Man, or The Prop, as supplies last). Or, if you want to stick with YA, a copy of Full House, an anthology of YA poker-themed short stories that I edited.

I'm doing this because I'd love for people to discover and support Addendum Books, and because I need to make room on my bookshelves. Also, I want to get you all hooked on the Klaatu Diskos trilogy.

A huge thank you to Pete for this very generous offer - everyone loved receiving a gift along with their purchase!

We had a blast today!
If you were unable to make it to the event, you can pick up signed copies of Pete's books at Addendum.
