Forced to flee, he meets-and is employed by-and odd samurai named Manjiro, who is on his way to Edo to advise the shogun about the western invaders. Yoshi encounters plenty of adventures traveling with a man suspected of being an American spy. Through it all, Yoshi, like most of his countrymen, just wants the “hairy ones” to go away. On Saturday, October 17th at 3:00pm, Addendum hosted the launch party for Eliza Nolan's debut novel, PHOENIX AWAKENS. "A paranormal debut about a high school senior who finds herself in a fight with a secret society for control of ancient magic. Julia never believed in magic. Julia Long is starting her senior year with an extra dose of crazy. The dreams of cultish, bloody rituals are weird enough, but the victim in her lifelike dreams is her new classmate, Southern charmer Graham. Graham admits he was a Phoenix — part of a centuries old secret society — but swears he left it all behind. As Julia works with Graham to figure out why she is dreaming about his past, she's discovering she has other abilities. She heals Graham’s migraines with a touch, and there’s her superhuman strength that comes and goes. Julia doesn’t know where her new talents come from, but there’s no denying that when Graham is near, her powers kick into overdrive. But the Phoenix Society wants Graham back. They need his blood to awaken the magic they seek, and they'll do whatever it takes to get it. Can Julia uncover the truth behind her connection to Graham? How far will Julia go in order to save Graham and stop the Phoenixes from harnessing this powerful magic?"

Dawn Klehr 10/10/15 7:00pm

On Saturday, October 10th at 7:00pm we held the launch party for Dawn Klehr's newest book, IF YOU WRONG US. The event was held at 1330 Quincy St. NE, Minneapolis. "Becca and Johnny become entangled after a car crash steals the lives of two people they love. Officially, the crash is an accident. But Becca and Johnny are convinced: someone did this. As they plot revenge against the person responsible, a bond--intense, unyielding, and manic--takes hold of them. And in an unexpected turn of events, they fall for each other. Or so they think. In an upside-down world where decay is beautiful and love and hate become one, Becca and Johnny find themselves grappling with reality. Nothing is exactly what it seems, including what they've come to believe about the crash. Question is: will they learn the truth before it's too late? No. The question is: when they learn the truth, will they care?"

S.A. Bodeen 10/3/15 7:00pm

Launch party for THE DETOUR by S.A. Bodeen at Addendum on Saturday, October 3rd, at 7:00pm! "Livvy Flynn is a big deal - she's a New York Times-bestselling author whose YA fiction has sold all over the world. She's rich, she's famous, she's gorgeous, and she's full of herself. When she's invited to an A-list writer's conference, she decides to accept so she can have some time to herself. She's on a tight deadline for her next book, and she has no intention of socializing with the other industry people at the conference. And then she hits the detour. Before she knows it, her brand new car is wrecked, she's hurt, and she's tied to a bed in a nondescript shack in the middle of nowhere. A woman and her apparently manic daughter have kidnapped her. And they have no intention of letting her go."

About Belle Junque: "Belle Junque is a small business that focuses on renewing and restyling furniture and home décor. We are an occasional shop located at 474 Cleveland Avenue South in St. Paul. Our market days when the shop is open are always the second Thursday through Sunday of every month. The doors are also open whenever possible throughout the month so that customers can stop in to browse and shop, but the store may not have as much inventory as during the designated market days. The goal is to gather items between market events and create a new look each month. We will have a little of everything—restyled furniture, old home décor, authentic antiques, and industrial lighting—all in a French farmhouse and French flea market style. Our goal is to reuse and repurpose as much as possible, yet we also supplement with new items."

Rob Buyea 9/30/15

"The kids from Mr. Terupt’s fifth- and sixth-grade classes are entering their first year of junior high school. There’s a lot to be excited about, but there are new challenges, too. Peter and Jeffrey face tough competition on their wrestling team. Alexia has a disastrous first day of school, and that’s only the beginning. Anna is desperate for Charlie to propose to her mother—what is he waiting for?! Danielle isn’t feeling so well, but she's trying to tough it out, like Grandma. Trouble with a bully makes Luke dread going to school for the first time ever. And Jessica is waiting anxiously for an acceptance to a theater retreat in New York City. Everyone is missing Mr. Terupt. When a fight threatens to break up the group forever, they think their favorite teacher is the only one who can help them. But the kids soon find out that it’s Mr. Terupt who needs saving."

Andrew Smith 9/24/15 7:00pm

Andrew Smith joined us on Thursday, September 24th at 7:00pm to celebrate the release of his newest book, STAND-OFF (sequel to WINGER)! We partnered with St. Catherine University's American Library Assoiciation Student Chapter for this event, which was held at St. Kate's in Coeur de Catherine, room 17. "It’s his last year at Pine Mountain, and Ryan Dean should be focused on his future, but instead, he’s haunted by his past. His rugby coach expects him to fill the roles once played by his lost friend, Joey, as the rugby team’s stand-off and new captain. And somehow he’s stuck rooming with twelve-year-old freshman Sam Abernathy, a cooking whiz with extreme claustrophobia and a serious crush on Annie Altman—aka Ryan Dean’s girlfriend, for now, anyway. Equally distressing, Ryan Dean’s doodles and drawings don’t offer the relief they used to. He’s convinced N.A.T.E. (the Next Accidental Terrible Experience) is lurking around every corner—and then he runs into Joey’s younger brother Nico, who makes Ryan Dean feel paranoid that he’s avoiding him. Will Ryan Dean ever regain his sanity?"

Carrie Mesrobian and Pat Schmatz 9/18/15 7:00pm

On Friday, September 18th, we celebrated the launch of CUT BOTH WAYS by Carrie Mesrobian and LIZARD RADIO by Pat Schmatz. The event was at 7:00pm in Jeanne D'Arc at St. Catherine University (2004 Randolph Ave. St. Paul, MN 55105). CUT BOTH WAYS "is an unflinching look at a high school senior who must come to terms with his attraction to both his girlfriend and his male best friend. It took Will Caynes seventeen years to have his first kiss. He should be ecstatic…except that it was shared with his best friend, Angus, while they were both drunk and stoned. Will’s not gay, but he did sort of enjoy whatever it was he felt with Angus. Unsettled by his growing interest in Angus, Will avoids his friend, and even starts dating a sophomore, Brandy. When he’s hooking up with her, he’s totally into it, so he must be straight, right? Then why does he secretly keep going back to Angus? Confusing as Will’s feelings are, they’re a welcome distraction from his complicated home life. His father has started drinking earlier each day when he should be working on what seem like never-ending house renovations. And his mom—living in a McMansion with her new husband—isn’t much help, just buying Will a bunch of stuff he doesn’t need. Neither feels like much of a parent—which leaves Will on his own in figuring things out with his girlfriend and best friend. He loves them both, but deciding who to be with will ultimately hurt someone. Himself probably the most."

On Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm Lynne Jonell was at Addendum to celebrate the launch of her newest book, THE SIGN OF THE CAT! "Talking cats, a missing princess, swordfights with villains, and secret identities combine in this epic tale of bravery and self-discovery on the high seas. Duncan is smart. He also has a most unusual gift. So why does his mother encourage him to be perfectly average and insist he get only mediocre grades? His special talent is the ability to talk to cats - but Duncan longs more than anything for academic success. When Duncan rebels and gets a perfect test score, people start taking notice of him. And it turns out that some of those people may not have the best of intentions... not by a long shot."

Adam Silvera - More Happy Than Not 6/16/15 7:00pm

We celebrated Adam Silvera's debut novel, MORE HAPPY THAN NOT on Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00pm. "The Leteo Institute's revolutionary memory-relief procedure seems too good to be true to Aaron Soto -- miracle cure-alls don't tend to pop up in the Bronx projects. But Aaron can't forget how he's grown up poor or how his friends aren't always there for him. Like after his father committed suicide in their one bedroom apartment. Aaron has the support of his patient girlfriend, if not necessarily his distant brother and overworked mother, but it's not enough. Then Thomas shows up. He has a sweet movie-watching setup on his roof, and he doesn't mind Aaron's obsession with a popular fantasy series. There are nicknames, inside jokes. Most importantly, Thomas doesn't mind talking about Aaron's past. But Aaron's newfound happiness isn't welcome on his block. Since he's can't stay away from Thomas or suddenly stop being gay, Aaron must turn to Leteo to straighten himself out, even if it means forgetting who he is. Adam Silvera's extraordinary debut novel offers a unique confrontation of race, class and sexuality during one charged near-future summer in the Bronx."

A Wizard of Their Age: Critical Essays from the Harry Potter Generation 5/3/15 4:00-6:00pm

On Sunday, May 3rd we celebrated A Wizard of Their Age, a collection of Harry Potter essays, edited by Cecilia Konchar Farr. We celebrated in conjunction with Voldemort Defeat Day (May 2nd) and the beginning of Children's Book Week (May 4th-10th)! There were readings by multiple contributors, treats, a costume contest, and more! "A Wizard of Their Age began when the students in Cecilia Konchar Farr’s “Six Degrees of Harry Potter” course at St. Catherine University kept finding errors in the available scholarship. These students had been reading Harry Potter for their entire literate lives, and they demanded more attention to the details they found significant. “We can do better than this,” they said. Konchar Farr, two undergraduate teaching assistants, and five student editors decided to test that hypothesis. After issuing a call for contributions, they selected fifteen thoughtful academic essays by students from across the country. These essays examine the Harry Potter books from a variety of perspectives, including literary, historical, cultural, gender, mythological, psychological, theological, and genetic—there is even a nursing care plan for Tom Riddle. Interspersed among the essays are brief vignettes entitled “My Harry Potter Story,” where students write about their personal encounters with the novels. Although a quick Internet search yields a dazzling number of books about Harry Potter, few are as deeply invested or insightful as A Wizard of Their Age. Written and edited by—and for—members of the Harry Potter generation, these essays demonstrate this generation’s passionate engagement with the Harry Potter phenomenon and provide numerous critical insights into the individual novels and the series as a whole."

Taking the Stand Launch - Juliann Rich 4/25/15 7:00pm

On Saturday, April 25th at 7:00pm author Juliann Rich celebrated the launch of the final novel in her Caught in the Crossfire trilogy - TAKING THE STAND! "There’s a time for justice. Then there’s a time for action. And Jonathan Cooper knows exactly what time it is. It is time to lie. To his parents, who think he’s on a ski trip with Pete Mitchell when he’s really gone to Madison to search for one person willing to testify for his boyfriend, Ian McGuire, who is facing the charge of Assault and Battery. To Ian’s parents, who have erased him from their lives. Even to himself. Because admitting his feelings for Mason Kellerman isn’t an option. It is also time to face the truth. That Jonathan may have lied for nothing. That he may be powerless to save Ian from a guilty verdict. That whether he likes it or not, it is time for TAKING THE STAND."

Laura Ruby (BONE GAP) and Christine Heppermann (POISONED APPLES) 4/10/15

Laura Ruby (BONE GAP) and Christine Heppermann (POISONED APPLES) read at Addendum on Friday, April 10th at 7:00pm. BONE GAP: "Bone Gap is the story of Roza, a beautiful girl who is taken from a quiet midwestern town and imprisoned by a mysterious man, and Finn, the only witness, who cannot forgive himself for being unable to identify her kidnapper. As we follow them through their melancholy pasts, their terrifying presents, their uncertain futures, acclaimed author Laura Ruby weaves a heartbreaking tale of love and loss, magic and mystery, regret and forgiveness—a story about how the face the world sees is never the sum of who we are." POISONED APPLES: "Cruelties come not just from wicked stepmothers, but also from ourselves. There are expectations, pressures, judgment, and criticism. Self-doubt and self-confidence. But there are also friends, and sisters, and a whole hell of a lot of power there for the taking. In fifty poems, Christine Heppermann confronts society head on. Using fairy tale characters and tropes, Poisoned Apples explores how girls are taught to think about themselves, their bodies, and their friends. The poems range from contemporary retellings to first-person accounts set within the original tales, and from deadly funny to deadly serious. Complemented throughout with black-and-white photographs from up-and-coming artists, this is a stunning and sophisticated book to be treasured, shared, and paged through again and again."

Derek E. Sullivan Launch Party 3/15/15 2:00pm

Launch party for Derek E. Sullivan's book Biggie was on Sunday, March 15th at 2:00pm at Addendum. "Henry 'Biggie' Abbott is the son of one of Finch, Iowa’s most famous athletes. His father was a baseball legend and his step-dad is a close second. At an obese 300+ pounds though, Biggie himself prefers classroom success to sports. As a perfectionist, he doesn’t understand why someone would be happy getting two hits in five trips to the plate. “Forty percent, that’s an F in any class,” he would say. As Biggie’s junior year begins, the girl of his dreams, Annabelle Rivers, starts to flirt with him. Hundreds of people have told him to follow in his dad's footsteps and play ball, but Annabelle might be the one to actually convince him to try. What happens when a boy who has spent his life since fourth grade trying to remain invisible is suddenly thrust into the harsh glare of the high school spotlight?"

Bryan Bliss Launch Party! 2/27/15 7:00pm

On Friday, February 27th, Addendum Books hosted Bryan Bliss for the launch party for his novel NO PARKING AT THE END TIMES: " Abigail's parents believed the world was going to end. And—of course—it didn't. But they've lost everything anyway. And she must decide: does she still believe in them? Or is it time to believe in herself? Fans of Sara Zarr, David Levithan, and Rainbow Rowell will connect with this moving debut. Abigail's parents never should have made that first donation to that end-of-times preacher. Or the next, or the next. They shouldn't have sold their house. Or packed Abigail and her twin brother, Aaron, into their old van to drive across the country to San Francisco, to be there for the "end of the world." Because now they're living in their van. And Aaron is full of anger, disappearing to who-knows-where every night. Their family is falling apart. All Abigail wants is to hold them together, to get them back to the place where things were right. But maybe it's too big a task for one teenage girl. Bryan Bliss's thoughtful debut novel is about losing everything—and about what you will do for the people you love."

The release date for the book was May 27th, but the book was available early ONLY at this event. "Lesh and Svetlana, two teens from St. Paul, Minnesota, are adrift in a sea of social coterie, desperate for something to change. When they crash into one another in a drunken bicycle accident at two am, they don’t yet know how close they are to finding it. For now, Svetlana is simply looking for a fifth member to legitimize the Central High School Gaming Club, and Lesh is looking to escape his being grounded for said drunkenness by entering, reluctantly, the world of online role playing games. Lesh’s gaming life takes an interesting turn as, unable to figure out how to speak to Svetlana, he “becomes” her in-game. When real life and in-game life inevitably become entwined, Lesh and Svetlana both start to realize that the lines they draw to keep their lives in order are not so easy to maintain. Especially when they no longer understand why they drew them in the first place."

Pete Hautman 5/11/14

We were so excited to host Pete Hautman for the final installment in his Klaatu Diskos trilogy - THE KLAATU TERMINUS! We celebrated on Sunday, May 11th at 1:00pm with a reading and signing. About Book 1, The Obsidian Blade: Kicking off a riveting sci-fi trilogy, National Book Award winner Pete Hautman plunges us into a world where time is a tool — and the question is, who will control it? The first time his father disappeared, Tucker Feye had just turned thirteen. The Reverend Feye simply climbed on the roof to fix a shingle, let out a scream, and vanished — only to walk up the driveway an hour later, looking older and worn, with a strange girl named Lahlia in tow. In the months that followed, Tucker watched his father grow distant and his once loving mother slide into madness. But then both of his parents disappear. Now in the care of his wild Uncle Kosh, Tucker begins to suspect that the disks of shimmering air he keeps seeing — one right on top of the roof — hold the answer to restoring his family. And when he dares to step into one, he’s launched on a time-twisting journey — from a small Midwestern town to a futuristic hospital run by digitally augmented healers, from the death of an ancient prophet to a forest at the end of time. Inevitably, Tucker’s actions alter the past and future, changing his world forever.

Despite all the beauty there, Tessa can't help but feel even more lost. Her most cherished posession - a rare plant of her mother's - is starting to wither, and with it, Tessa's heart and her hope.
